Athlete of the Month – Deklin “The Duck” Sterling

At the young age of only eight, young Mr. Sterling has
worked very hard at his chosen sport, BMX racing. In his short career, he’s
already won such accolades and awards as #1 Rookie in Evansville in 2009, First
Place in the 2009 Christmas Classic, 2
nd Place at the Music City
Nationals in 2009 and 2
nd Place at the Hoosier Nationals earlier
this year, among others.
Sterling
took a few to answer our questions as this issue’s Athlete of the Month.
GT: How many years
have you been racing?
DS: Three.
And what grade are
you going into?
Third, at Stringtown Elementary.
Do you play any other
sports?
Basketball… at my house. And I ride my skateboard.
How often do you
practice riding your bike?
A lot.
What made you decide
to get into racing?
I don’t know [it was] just a lot of fun.
What’s your favorite
thing about the track?
Racing on it… having fun on it… [going] up and down…
So how did you get
the nickname “The Duck?”
[From] my grandpa.
Do you travel a lot for
your sport?
I went to Indianapolis, Nashville – here, where I live – I
like to go to Burdette Park.
Do you like school?
What’s your favorite subject?
My favorite subject is math.

Yes!
